Many people wonder if you need to pass an IELTS exam to get to the UK. Based on my own experience, I can tell you that it’s not always necessary. I moved to the UK in 2006 as a student, and after completing my degree and working, I was able to get my Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) and, eventually, my UK citizenship—all without ever taking an IELTS test.
My Journey from Student to UK Citizen
I started my computer systems degree in my home country. After two years, I spoke with my university about my dream of studying in the UK. They helped me find an affiliated university there to complete my final two years. This was a massive advantage. Since my degree was taught entirely in English from the beginning, I didn’t need to prove my language skills with an exam.
Completing a British degree was the key to my success. It made it much easier for me to get a job, apply for a work permit, and eventually, for my citizenship. When I applied for my ILR, they asked me about my English qualifications. While someone with an IELTS score might have an advantage here, completing a degree within the UK was a huge benefit for me. I didn’t have to take any other English tests to get my citizenship because my British degree certificate was enough.
My Friend’s Experience: Why English is Important
While I was able to get by without an IELTS exam, a friend of mine had a completely different experience. He was afraid of English and came to the UK without taking an IELTS test. Unfortunately, he faced huge problems. He couldn’t extend his visa or settle properly because of the language barrier. He found it difficult to write letters, take exams, and even talk to people. He ended up living here illegally and is always complaining about how difficult life in the UK is. My experience taught me that even if you don’t take the IELTS exam, a strong command of English is absolutely crucial for a smooth transition and long-term success.
The Difference Between Visa Types
My friend came to the UK on a “caregiver visa,” which is officially called the Health and Care Worker Visa. For this specific visa, you must have an IELTS score or an equivalent English qualification to apply. This is a strict requirement. If you are applying directly for a skilled worker visa, you also need to show your English test results.
My story shows that while it might not be a requirement for everyone, especially if you complete your degree in the UK, having strong English skills is the most important thing for living and working here.
